Why the 3-D Commission

It is well-established that where we live, learn, work, and play have a significant impact on our health. Health outcomes are determined by factors well beyond the clinic or our genes.   But, despite a growing body of evidence, social determinants of health do not always factor into decision-making to improve either individual or population health.  Data are one of the most important tools available for better help decision-making by practitioners and policy makers alike. However, data alone, without a clear framework, cannot tell the full story.

The 3-D Commission aims to bridge these gaps and to create a common language between the fields of data science, health determinants, and policy and practice decision-making. It builds on the observation that health determinants matter, that data can help us understand how they matter, and that this understanding can help us decide the most effective means of improving the health of the global population.

Our approach

We are bringing cutting-edge research on health determinants and data together with policymakers and practitioners in an innovative way to provide guidance about how public health policies and practice can more efficiently and systematically improve population health in countries across the wealth spectrum. Specifically, the Commission seeks to answer the following questions:

  1. How do we create a new data-driven approach to inform decision-makers who aim to improve health through improving the social and economic conditions that drive health both globally and locally?

  2. How do we create a demand for public and private investment in the social determinants of health?
